WORLD MILK DAY 1 June 2007
13.05.2008

Dear all,

Please let me have your ideas/plans for this year's WORLD MILK DAY!

For those who haven't anything planned yet, there is still some time left (about 3 weeks) to organize a small event, a press release etc.... for inspiration, I am attaching below examples of last year's activities, reports and pictures.

Barbara

Please join in the celebration of WORLD MILK DAY on 1st June 2

Why hold a World Milk Day? The Day provides an opportunity to focus attention on milk and to publicise activities connected with milk and the milk industry. The fact that many countries choose to do this on the same day lends additional importance to individual national celebrations and shows that milk is a global food.
Where did it begin? FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) was asked to propose a specific day on which all aspects of milk could be celebrated.
Why 1st June? This date was chosen because a number of countries were already celebrating a national milk day on or around this time. Late May was originally proposed, but some countries, for example China, felt they already had too many celebrations in that month. While most countries hold their celebrations on 1st June, some choose to hold them a week or so before or after this date.

DeLaval:

Global celebrations of World Milk Day – June 1

All across the globe DeLaval employees are preparing to celebrate the World Milk Day to honour this nutritious and well tasting beverage. Many DeLaval companies, all over the world, have chosen to spend this day celebrating milk.

This year DeLaval International has invited their former colleague Johan Jakobsson back to the office in Sweden, to share his views on what DeLaval means for the modern dairy farmer. Johan has several years of experience from working at DeLaval and a few years ago he returned to the island of Gotland to run his family farm.

We will also welcome a group of 50 local school children to the R&D farm of DeLaval – Hamra Farm – and introduce them to their four legged neighbours, the 450 dairy cows at Hamra. They will be guided through the farm and barns to learn about modern dairy production and the day will end with a milk break.

DeLaval Denmark will celebrate the World Milk Day by inviting the whole office to a delicious and healthy milk breakfast to start off the day.

In DeLaval Germany, wearing self-made cow outfits, teams from the office will distribute ice-lollies and cheese to all staff who visits the canteen to prove that milk is not only healthy but at the same time extremely delicious.

DeLaval USA will work together with DeLaval Canada to honour this fantastic day. In Kansas City the staff will hand out milk supplied by Belfonte, together with cheese donated by Dairy Farmers America at an intersection near the DeLaval office. T-shirts recognizing WMD will be worn by the employee volunteers. The life size fibreglass cow along with the DeLaval van, and milk delivery truck supplied by Belfonte will be positioned with signs, banners and posters promoting World Milk Day at the intersection to further promote the goodness of dairy. All DeLaval employees will enjoy a complimentary luncheon and ice cream social.

In Canada, DeLaval & Tetra Pak will once again collaborate to giveaway free milk to passing motorists during lunch hour. Local Canadian dairy producer, Gerry Coughlin of Trent Valley Farms will lend his support by bringing in a Holstein and Jersey cow to visually remind the consumers of the source of this extraordinary food and our business.

During the week leading up to event on Friday June 1, a focus on educating internal staff on the importance of milk in their daily diet has been planned.
Numerous health related posters will be mounted throughout the DeLaval facility as well as the delivery of a nutritional display from the Peterborough City & County Health Unit. Dairy Farmers of Ontario has been contacted to provide staff with promotional material which reinforces the health benefits of milk.

The celebration will conclude with a complimentary pizza and ice cream luncheon served to all Peterborough Office staff.

In Brazil, the DeLaval employees will donate milk to an institution of their choice. The milk collection will last over a couple of weeks and the milk will then be delivered on June 1. During this day some internal celebrations such as a milk break with various products from the Fazenda Sao José, the largest farm in Brazil, will also take place.

Good luck to all of you who will celebrate on Friday, June 1!

School Milk’s back; and 92% of parents don’t realise it

School Milk was axed in 1971 by then Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher. However 30 years on, and the old favourite is back in schools.

5.6 million Primary School children in England* are entitled to 189ml of free or subsidised milk everyday, thanks to UK funding from the Welfare Foods scheme, and EU subsidy available under the Rural Payment Agency.

This year; from its Lincolnshire base of operations, National School Milk Agency Cool Milk at School has enabled 2633 schools to put school milk back on the menu, offering refrigerated milk to 467,000 primary school aged children.**
However; worryingly 92% of children may still not be getting a daily intake of the essential nutrients, necessary for a healthy balanced diet.

Managing Director of Cool Milk at School, Jon Thornes said:
“Milk is a power house of nutrients, and one of the richest sources of calcium. We have made milk accessible to 8% of England’s children, but every child, in every school should have the opportunity.”

Alan Johnson, Secretary of state for Education & Skills shares this view:
“The secretary of state for Education & Skills strongly recommends that drinking milk is made available as an option everyday.”***

Dame Suzi Leather, Deputy Chair of Food Standards Agency added:
“Milk is the most nutritionally complete food containing nearly all the constituents of nutritional importance to humans. In particular it is essential for the development of strong healthy teeth and bones in young children.”

“A glass of milk provides a six year old child with 55% of the calcium he or she needs everyday.”****

The Cool Milk Scheme is active in 31 Local Education Authorities; this service is available to all 150 LEA’S in England.

Tetra Pak Arabia Celebrates
World Milk Day in Dubai

Fun-filled games and milk festivity mark World Milk Day in Dubai.

Dubai, June 2007: Tetra Pak Arabia organised a fun-filled daylong carnival featuring cheerful games and plenty of healthy and nutritious milk to mark this year’s World Milk Day. Aimed at raising awareness about the importance of milk, the event was held at the Children’s City in Dubai Creek Park and was open to public. Celebrated on 1st June every year, World Milk Day is promoted by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to create awareness on the benefits of milk.

“World Milk Day gives Tetra Pak a great opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of drinking milk and the protection that our packages provide in line with our motto, protects what’s good”, remarked Amar Zahid, Managing Director Tetra Pak Arabia. “This is what we aim to do through an enjoyable platform like a fun-filled World Milk Day. We hope that people participating in the event continue to influence other people to drink milk for a healthier lifestyle”, he added.

The event involved schools, pupils and their families who participated in a range of activities including art competition, kindergarten colouring competition and a variety of games centred around healthy and nutritious milk. Tetra Pak Arabia’s local and regional dairy customers had put up their stands and offered free samples of long life milk to visitors. Children particularly liked magic show and story-telling episodes with frequent clown appearances which engaged them throughout the day. The proceeds raised through games went to the school library fund.

“World Milk Day in Dubai is part of Tetra Pak’s ongoing drive to raise awareness about the health benefits of packaged milk in Arabia. Earlier this year we also partnered with the Ministries of Health and Education in Saudi Arabia to raise awareness about the health benefits of drinking milk”, remarked Jesus Ortega, Dairy Category Manager, Tetra Pak Arabia.

Tetra Pak is also supporting the work of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to help spread this message worldwide. Under this three-year cooperation agreement with IOF Tetra Pak is a major partner in the IOF activities to promote awareness of how individuals can build strong bones and contribute to their own bone health.

Peru:

Peru Celebrated the World Milk Day

Peru celebrated the World Milk Day, thanks to the impulse of the Dairy Industrial Association, which assembles the most important Peruvian companies of the sector.

The celebrations began with a press conference for journalists specialized in business topics and health. A breakfast based on milk in its different types and dairy food was served. This action echoed in the diverse communication media reporting to the community about the situation of the dairy market in the country and the benefits of milk and dairy products consumption as a nourishing food and to prevent diverse diseases to support a healthy life.

On the other hand, the most important news radio informed extensively about the topic, interviewing the dairy representative. Likewise, a well known nutritionist appeared on the television and radio highlighting the importance of this day and giving advises about the advantages of milk as an indispensable food to the health of all consumers in any ages.

The final consumer celebrated with Gloria brand in several supermarkets testing products like milk, yogurt and cheese. Commemorative paper ties and stickers on its dairy products caught the attention of adults and children. Also, information about the celebration was distributed.
Finally, Gloria’s dairy products were offered for free to children of very poor zones of the capital, showing them the importance of a healthy nutrition.
